How the campaign email looks on a phone

Campaign emails adapt to the width of whoever opens them, with no setting to turn on. There is no portrait or landscape in email: what exists is available width. This article explains what the CRM does for you, what in your own content can still break the layout, and how to test before sending.

Campaign emails are built to fit the screen of whoever opens them. The content flows to the available width, with a reading limit on wide screens so lines do not become uncomfortably long, and it shrinks the spacing on narrow screens. There is nothing to enable: every campaign already goes out this way.

There is no portrait or landscape in email

Unlike a document or a slide, an email has no page orientation. What exists is the width the mail app gives it, which changes with the device and even with the size of the window. That is why the answer to "can I switch to landscape" is that there is nothing to switch: what makes the message comfortable on a phone is a single column that uses the width available, which is exactly what the CRM produces.

What can still break the layout, and it comes from the content

  • A very wide image. It shrinks to fit, but a picture much wider than tall becomes a thin strip on a phone. Prefer images up to about 1200 pixels wide, and avoid text inside the image, because it shrinks with it.
  • A table pasted from a spreadsheet. Tables do not reflow: a wide one forces sideways scrolling. Break it into lines of text, or send it as an attachment or a link.
  • A very long link written out in full. It cannot be broken in the middle in some apps and pushes the message sideways. Write the link as a word that carries the link, like "see the proposal", instead of pasting the whole address.
  • Text copied from a word processor. It may carry a fixed width and colors from the original document. Paste as plain text when the layout looks off.

How to test before sending to everyone

  1. Open the campaign and use the preview to read the message as it will be delivered.
  2. Send a test to yourself, from the campaign screen.
  3. Open that test on your phone, not only on the computer, because that is where the width is tight.
  4. If something does not fit, look for the four items above in your own content: image, table, long link or pasted formatting.
💡 Dark mode changes the colors of some mail apps on its own. If the message looks washed out on a phone in dark mode, avoid very light gray text and pale logos, which are the first things to disappear.

If it still does not fit

Send us the campaign name, the app where you opened it (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail) and a screenshot. The rendering differs between apps, and the screenshot tells us which one to reproduce.
