Commission split · dividing a deal between reps
A commission split records how the commission on an opportunity is divided among several reps, by percentage. Besides documenting the agreement, the split is read when statements are generated under Commissions: with a split, each rep earns on their share; without one, the deal owner takes the full amount.
When two reps work the same deal, the question shows up at the end of the month: who earns how much. With no place to record the agreement, the split turns into a side spreadsheet and an argument. The Commission splits object keeps the agreement in writing and, more to the point, is read by the statement calculation.
Where it lives
Commission splits is not a standalone menu item: it lives inside the Commissions page, under the Sales menu. Open Commissions and click the Commission splits link at the top to get to the full list, where you create and edit records.
Fields on each share
- Rep: required. The name of whoever earns this part of the commission.
- Opportunity: required. The deal the commission relates to.
- Percentage (%): required. This rep's share. The splits on the same deal should add up to 100%.
- Amount: the commission amount for this share, when you want to record it explicitly.
- Notes: the details of the agreement.
How the split reaches the statement
On the Commissions page, the administrator defines the plans, with a base rate, tiers by quota attainment and per-product rates, and assigns a plan to each rep with an effective date. When you click Generate statements and enter the period, the system pulls the won opportunities with a close date inside the period and divides the base like this:
- The deal has splits: each rep's base is their share of the amount, calculated in cents, with the rounding remainder absorbed by the last share so the total comes out exact.
- The deal has no splits: the whole base goes to the opportunity owner.
- Each person's plan in force for the period is then applied to their base.
- Open Sales, Commissions and click Commission splits.
- Create one record per participant in the deal.
- Under Rep, type the full name or the e-mail exactly as it appears on the user's record in the CRM.
- Pick the Opportunity and enter the Percentage (%).
- Check that the percentages on the same deal add up to 100%.
- Go back to Commissions and click Generate statements for the period.
Limits and permissions
- The Rep field is text and is matched to the user records by full name or e-mail. A name typed differently from the user record leaves that share with no owner and out of the statement. That is the most common mistake.
- The system does not stop the percentages from adding up to more or less than 100%. Checking is on you.
- Only won opportunities with a close date inside the period and an amount greater than zero make it into the statement.
- Generating statements is an administrator action. Regenerating replaces drafts only: approved or paid statements stay immutable.
- Each rep can see their own statements on the Commissions page; the plans and the generation stay with whoever administers.
Common questions
- I created the split after generating the statement. Do I have to redo it? Yes, generate the statement for the period again. The draft is replaced.
- The rep did not show up on the statement. What happened? Check that the name under Rep matches the user's full name or e-mail, and that they have a commission plan in force for the period.
- Do I have to fill in the Amount field? It is not required. The statement calculates from the Percentage (%) and the plan. The Amount field is there to put the agreement in writing.
- Can I also split channel or partner deals? Partner commission has its own record in the partners module. This object is for splitting between internal reps.
