Email click tracking
Links in email sent by sequences and by flow steps go through an address of their own that counts the click and redirects to the destination instantly. For a button with a visible click count on screen, use marketing CTAs.
An email open says very little: plenty of people open and ignore. A click is the strong signal, because it shows interest in something specific. Click tracking measures that without getting in the recipient way, since they still go straight to the destination.
How it works
Before sending, the CRM swaps the address of every link in the body for an address of its own. When someone clicks, the CRM records the click and redirects immediately to the real destination. To the person receiving it, the behavior is exactly that of a normal link.
- Only absolute links starting with http or https are swapped.
- Unsubscribe links are never tracked, so nothing gets in the way of the right to leave the list.
- Anchors within the page, email addresses and relative links are left alone.
- The redirect is immediate. If the stored address turns out to be invalid, the click lands on a safe system page instead of throwing an error.
Where tracking is applied
- Email sent by sequences: yes, automatically. Just use normal links in the step body.
- Email steps inside flows and campaigns: yes, automatically.
- Social posts published with a link: the link goes out tracked and the clicks show up in the Social metrics.
- Bulk email sends from the Email tab: the links go out exactly as you wrote them, with no address swap. If clicks matter on that message, build the touch as a campaign or a sequence, or use a CTA.
There is no screen listing clicks person by person. What a click feeds is the engagement history: it goes into campaign analytics and becomes available as a segmentation criterion, in the Email clicks (count) field, so you can build a segment of people who clicked more than once, for example.
CTAs with a visible count
When you want to see the number of clicks right on the screen, use CTAs. Open Marketing, click More and choose the CTAs card.
- Register the CTA with a name, the button label, up to 120 characters, and the destination address.
- If you want, link the CTA to a campaign so it shows up in that campaign report.
- Click Copy link and use that address in an email, on your site or wherever you need it.
- The CTA row itself shows the click count.
Limits and permissions
- There is no way to turn tracking off in sequence and flow email: it is always applied. What you control is page tracking on your website, which is optional.
- Any user in the organization can browse the CTA list and see the counts.
- Creating, editing and deleting CTAs requires permission to manage settings.
- A CTA destination address has to start with http or https; any other address does not redirect.
Common questions
- Does the recipient notice? No. The redirect is instant and they arrive at the address you chose.
- Does a repeated click count twice? The count adds up every click. For engagement per person, use the click segmentation criterion.
- I changed the CTA destination, do the old clicks disappear? No. The count stays on the same CTA.
- I deleted a CTA that was already in sent emails. The old links stop redirecting, so prefer changing the destination rather than deleting.
