Website visitor tracking
Paste a short script on your website and start seeing how many visits and how many unique visitors you had over the last 30 days, and which pages drew the most traffic. Linking a visitor to a CRM contact is a separate step, optional and off by default.
Knowing your site gets traffic is easy. Tying that traffic to your pipeline is the hard part. Visitor tracking is the first rung: it records page views, shows what draws people in and, when you want it to, links the anonymous visit to the contact who identified themselves later.
Installing the script
- Open Marketing in the menu.
- Click More and choose the Visitors card.
- On the Tracking script card, click Copy. The button confirms with Copied.
- Paste the snippet just before the closing body tag, on every page of your site.
The script is short and runs in the visitor browser. It sends the page address, the path, the referrer the person came from and a random identifier stored in their browser. Campaign parameters in the URL, such as source, medium and campaign name, are pulled out and kept for attribution.
What you see
- Visits (30 days): the total number of page views in the period.
- Unique visitors: how many different browsers produced those visits.
- Most visited pages: the ten pages with the most views, each with its count.
The period is fixed at 30 days and the screen has no date filter and no chart. Any user in the organization can open the tab and see those numbers.
Linking a visit to a contact, and privacy
Recording the visit and recognizing who the person is are two different things. Page views are recorded as soon as the script is installed. Linking that anonymous visitor to a CRM contact is optional and starts off.
- Open Settings and go to Privacy & compliance.
- Under Behavioral tracking (marketing), check Enable behavioral web tracking.
- Save. Only people who can manage settings may change this option.
The screen itself explains the scope: email opens and clicks and form submissions are recorded either way, and this option governs only page tracking on your website. With it on, when the visitor submits a public form they stop being anonymous, their visit history becomes tied to the contact and the first campaign source is frozen for attribution purposes.
Common questions
- Do I have to turn the Privacy option on to see the numbers? No. Visits and most visited pages show up with the script alone.
- Does the same visitor on two browsers count as two people? Yes. The identifier is stored in the browser, so it counts separately.
- If someone clears their browser data, do I lose their history? The previous identifier is gone and they start counting as a new visitor.
- I pasted the script and nothing shows up. Check that the snippet is on every page and that no browser extension is blocking the request; the screen shows the last 30 days window.
